The other option is to buy a used Mac Pro tower. I live in Los Angeles and there are a ton of them listed on Craigslist for sale that are reasonably priced. The problem is I don't know enough about the Mac Pro towers spec-wise.

I actually figured it out myself. I had to create a vst folder, put the vst plugins in this folder, and then browse for this specific folder in Live's Preferences. All is good now!
