I disbanded Automap mode for now, too much of a hassle, but plugin mode is nice in Ableton because it can automatically map the 8 encoders to vst parameters

what firmware are you using?
I have recently updated to 695 where they claim to fix the bug of not releasing shift, but I have not checked yet.
