it would be nice to have the ability to automate the formant and other peramitors in the audio editing section so that it would be possible to get some really experimental sounds that way

you can use the maltiband dynamics stock plugins, there is a preset called reduce ambiance.
that usually works pretty good.
you can always combine that with a few of the other techniques mentioned in this thread
