There are two places on the Mac that I occasionally clean up: ~/Library/Application Support/Ableton and ~/Library/Preferences/Ableton.

According to the Transport section of the user manual (item 7):

The Arrangement Position fields show the song position in bars-beats-sixteenths.

To use standalone Max (as opposed to M4L) you also need a crossgrade license: https://cycling74.com/products/crossgrade.

You are using an older version: 4 < 20.

In addition to videos and tutorials suggested by others, I recommend reading the chapter on Live Concepts in the online user manual. It might help answer many basic questions.
