Homemade tb-303 , made for under $50. Given to me in Germany by 2 dudes that claimed it was the first prototype made by Roland. It has a midi in. If there is any truth to the legend of it, than Roland was using MIDI on the tb-303 during the prototype stages instead of voltage sync. I sketched the c...

Well, what I sometimes do in 4 is doing this to all send channels, then hiding the "real" sends and labeling new automated ones with big capslocked letters. The good thing is that you can automate what effects are on and off and so if only your third track of your set needs a resonator on ...

Make a send channel, don't put in any effects. You'll be using the send knobs of you audio tracks to send to this. Route it's output to the input of a new regular channel. Put that channel's monitoring ON. Fill the regular channel with blank clips or whatever other clips of the right length (you won...

The weird thing is that for some reason some people asume cracks, evne people that shouldn't. I was in a computer music shop a few months ago; saw a Ableton mousepad and wanted to know the price. "Those are free when you buy the software." "Yeah, but I already have the software, I'd l...

You just made me involuntarily imagine Chopin wearing a baseballcap. My lawyer will contact you about the costs of the therapy I now need.

Erm, no, I didn´t. I find I grow more critical but there is still plenty of stuff that profoundly moves me.

You can build your own. Vocal sounds have a set of 3 peaks; the relative distance (pitch-wise) determines what letter they sound like, the pitch of the bottom one determines the size and sex of the imaginary vocalist. What you´d need is a set of paralel bandpass filters with some resonance and a tab...

I use a Razer Boomslang mouse, one of those gamer affairs. The trick is that you can change the resolution by pressing one button while moving the scrollwheel. This is meant for sniping in 3d shooters but it comes in realy handy with getting those envelopes in exactly the right place.

Hey, no agression intended at all, I just wanted to plead in favour of a broad basis as a start instead of starting with a more in depth look at one speciffic kind of synthesis. It´s a different way of aproaching the matter; I have no stock in the book industry... It´s all fine with me. :¬)

Cheers.

pj is right. if its your first go round with synthesis, then power tools for synthesizers is the one you want. if youve been at it a while its going to take a couple passes for you to dig out new info, but if its a new subject to you itll help quite a bit. I´m always a bit weary of recomending book...

I second the sugestions of the Computer Music Tutorial and the Csound book. Most other texts are either just aimed at one synth or don´t go beyond substractive and fm synthesis. If you are at all instested in grains Microsound (also by Roads) is also well worth you time and money. In adition to the ...
