Re: Getting a good guitar sound

You can get a few free amp sims in AmpliTube or Guitar Rig, or you can get 30 day trials at PluginAlliance. PA's sims are pretty good and there's lots of different amps available, so just using the free trials gives you months of recording for nothing, and they have sales quite often so you can pick...

Re: Kick getting squashed in mastering

Have you tried using a sidechain on the compressor? That allows the kick to cut through while other tracks are compressed.

Re: Which controller?

Launchpad is great, so I'd +1 jestermgee. As the drummer in our band I use Roland SPD-SX or Yamaha DTX-Multi12 as I can trigger either with sticks. The Yamaha has more MIDI capability but the Roland would be ideal for what you're after. Or if you need a foot controller the Behringer FCB1010 is popul...

Re: jumping back exactly one bar?

Hi, I use ClyphX Pro to do this. I have two buttons on my midi controller; one to go back a bar, one to go forward a bar. Works a treat.

Re: Who uses Live with a live band? What tips can you give me?

No video out there, I did record one but it turns out I'm a better drummer than video maker so I didn't post it! We've refined our use of Ableton over the last couple of years, and are now really happy with how it works. I'm happy to share any knowledge or answer any queries that people have. We're ...

Re: Programming Novation LaunchControlXL not able to set the LED's from MIDI Messages

Hi, I tried to do exactly the same and found that sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. A couple of things if you haven't already tried them (sorry if this is really basic and you've already done them all): 1. Make sure the LCXL mode is set to the right one for the commands (so in your example i...

Re: Eq cut in real time on 2 channels?

You could midi map the two EQs to the same know on your controller, and then map them in Ableton so that: EQ1 has minimum of -infinity and max of zero EQ2 has minimum of zero and max of -infinity Then when the knob is all the way to the left EQ1 has no bass and EQ2 has full bass; and when knob is to...

Re: Cant sing to metronome cause it throws me out of the feelz

I agree completely with The Subject. I've been playing drums in bands for 40 years, the first 35 without a click and I wish I'd switched sooner. I find it gives me freedom rather than restricts me, gives me confidence that we're playing the song at the tempo that sounds best, gives me one less thing...

Re: What to do if a singer changes tempo throughout song?

We have the same issue with our band, trying to balance the human feel with keeping to a grid (either for using backing tracks live, or recording overdubs in the studio). Here's a couple of ideas that may help: 1. Play drums (acoustic or finger drumming) to the click, and then play everything else t...

Does VST3 or AU eat more CPU?

tl:dr VST3 plugins use less CPU than AU on MacBook M1 Greetings Macusers, I have always taken a haphazard approach to choosing between VST and AU so decided to experiment by putting 20 instances of a plug-in on a channel strip and seeing the effect on CPU. (I have an M1 MBP, 16Gb running Ableton 10)...

Re: Live 11 (and 10): CPU usage on macOS heavily dependent on size of the window

It could possibly be to do with the frame refresh rate. This article explains more:

I have my MBP at 15fps and I haven't noticed any real difference in how Ableton looks.

I hope that helps.

Re: Metronomic imperfection: how to make scene transitions sound more organic

You could, in arrangement view, automate the BPM on the Master track to slow down/speed up at the end of the section. You could also set the quantisation to "None" and then freestyle the transitions (you may need to reset the clock when you start of the next scene). You can use "groove" to add a bit...

Re: MacOS Big Sur and M1 (Apple Processor) support

I've recently bought a 13" M1 MacBook Pro. My previous laptop was a 2017 15" MacBook Pro i7 16gb RAM, running Bug Sur. I've not done detailed testing yet, but have opened up several of my previous projects and found no issues. I don't use heaps of VSTs or AUs, but I have a few ImageLine ones and Ar...

Re: Is this possible? - Macros - Position - Chain

I've not specifically tried it myself, but I think ClyphX Pro's SNAP command could help you. You'd set the macros up for the first chain and take a snapshot of that, then do the same for chains 2 and 3. You'd then assign one of your controller's buttons to each snapshot and be able to recall those p...

Re: recording with no time signature in free time

Hi Cath, and welcome! You can turn the metronome off and just record the violin, effectively without a time sig and in free time. Then tweak the position of the track when the tabla comes in. Would that work for you?
