Re: Live Asynchronous Looping?
totally do-able with a few instances of the Looper effect. for true asynchronous-ness you'll need to modify a few settings: the Record menu needs to be set to 'x bars', the Quantization, Song control and Tempo control menus set to 'none'. you'll need some clever signal routing and MIDI mapping in Li...

Re: iMac becomes slow when ableton is loaded
sometimes it happens on my 2007 imac as well. when it happens i run onyx (http://www.titanium.free.fr/index.php) that usually tells me that something is wrong with the startup disc. i then repair the disk with the Snow Leopard system disc, reboot and the problem disappears. it might not be that, but...

Re: Erosion without source sound
i often do that and what florian said works really well. i do it slightly differently though but the principle stays the same. create a rack with two lines and put erosion on line 1 and just an utility plugin with phase inverted on line 2, so it cancels out the feeding signal from the erosion plugin...

Re: A/B listening in Live (bypassing master plugs)
there is another way: create a new audio track, insert your reference 'song' and deactivate the track by clicking on the yellow button. after your last plugin in the master chain, insert live native compressor (make sure you set the ratio to 1 and switch off the make up gain so it doesn't act as a c...

Re: BCF 2000 (MCU) + LC XView + Live 8 = Love?
yes works very well with lc xview here, but bcf2000 faders feel very cheap, even though they get the job done. For 10 times the price you should get a euphonix mc

Re: changing from 10.4.11 to either leopard or snow leopard
Upgraded some time ago from 10.4.11 to SL on an 2007 iMac, 2.16 ghz without a glitch. The install process has been streamlined a lot and goes on top of what you have already. No need to re-install anything. Worked like a charm. One word of caution though, make a bootable clone of your entire drive b...

Re: Mastering in Ableton 8
I completely agree with you on all points, it makes complete sense. The reason why I mentioned gentle tape saturation is because reading Bob Katz book, there is a long-ish section about the Cranesong HEDD 192 and its tape emulation stage. So was wondering if such process is usual in mastering or not...

Re: Mastering in Ableton 8
Yes I read your Mastering guide (and the other ones) when you first published it and regularely since then and it's been really really helpful  The reason why I asked this question about sheen is that recently I sent my album to a mastering engineer and it came back sounding way better that my...

Re: Mastering in Ableton 8
Thanks for claryfing that Tarekith! But taking this argument to the extreme, if you are completely satisfied with your own mixdown and you have no money for external mastering, what kind of process would you use (except raising the level) to give the two-track more sheen and polish?

Re: Mastering in Ableton 8
I have always wondered about the utility of a multiband compressor if you master your own material. Since you have access to all the individual tracks, why would you need to use the multiband compressor to fix things you could fix within the mixdown session? Or does a multiband compressor allow thin...

Re: Mid Side processing in Ableton
There are probably better ways to set up all the routing. You could probably set something up with return channels and sends that would save some of the extra plumbing. m/s processing is done exactly as luddy said but can be done within racks very easily, so once you setup everything you can save y...

Re: What are you using for saturation?
As mentionned before the waveshaping tool of Live's saturation is really nice so sculpt your effect. Playing with the enveloppe paramater can also add very good contour to your sound. The overdrive plugin has a lot more for itself than it looks at first glance and can be a very nice alternative to t...

Re: When to use a sampler & when to lay it down straight
It's interesting to note that a lot of experienced and talented folks shun samplers. Every once and a while I vow to spend a good few days with a sampler in the hope that it's hidden benefits will be revealed but I never find find them. What should I be looking for? Sample manipulation on the timel...
