after more testing, 10.0.6 works OK with an egpu, 10.1.30 spikes GPU usage even for a totally blank set with one empty track running at fullscreen.

would love to hear others analysis on this...

here are some thoughts after doing some gpu benchmark testing Live 10.1.30 on macOS 10.14 with an rx580 egpu, 555x onboard gpu, mbp 15" 2019, 2.6ghz i7 16gb ram with 2x 32" 4k monitors.

ah, buffer size mismatch, Loopback only goes up to 512 and ableton was higher

about it being broken:
as a simple test, i setup VLC to play an mp3, which Loopback captures.
If I go into bitwig, and set Loopback as the input, it plays the vlc mp3 into a track as expected.

renamed the 10.1.15 directory to 10.1.17, after renaming .17 to something else, and everything came back

/Users/username/Library/Preferences/Ableton

did this happen to anyone else? was on 10.1.15, on Catalina, with auto updates on. No vsts, no folders in Places, no default template, no control surface scripts, no midi controllers, no custom anything, all gone...
anyone have ideas on how to recover from this? (i put in a support request)
