If I have a tricky edit, I group the affected tracks, make the edit and then un group. Not ideal but it works great.

I'm not sure I follow. How does grouping make this process more efficient for manipulating (especially deleting) time?

Just chiming into this thread to echo that a "Delete time" for individual tracks would be a real time saver for a lot of the work I do (1-stop shop dialogue editing, sound design, and music service for podcasts and other audio recordings). Otherwise, I have to do all of my dialogue editing...
