On further investigation, it appears that this issue is only when using an ASIO device setting with Ableton.

It seems to screw every other app up that has sound. Switching back to my Sonar Works device doesn't fix the issue, so a reboot is required.

I eventually got around to looking at this and it was the most obvious - the master channel was clipping !
