most important thing is becoming familiar with your system. Regarding mastering I do think there is an advantage using premium plugins over stock ones. study the manuals to become familiar with all important tools in the system, then find answers for whatever questions are left in the forums and youtube. if you do this you will learn quickly

sounds like the filter was too close to the mic, if its fixable, any eq dip will solve it, or de-esser. also compress with short attack. if this doesn't solve it, you probably need to record it again
