What makes an equaliser sound good?

What makes an EQ unit sound good? I know EQ3 lacks versatility next to, say, EQ8 or any of the 3 that come with Cubase 4, and that more bands means more precision but I don't think that's what people mean when they say they don't like the way EQ3 sounds.

I hope I'm wrong but the only way I've found to do this is to use Jack OSX - which is a free audio routing app - to fool Ableton into using separate hardware devices as different outlets of the same device.

It's not pretty but i works.

I found out today that the Live preset that comes stored on the MPD handles this automatically :oops:

AFAIK the transport issue is that the MPD sends MIDI Machine Control (MMC) messages but it's a protocol that Live doesn't support. BlueInGreen linked to a Max/MSP patch here:

okay, that's pretty freaking cool - it's so easy to map a sawtooth or random generator to any midi parameter now. Very neat trick, thanks =)
