Layering all the way!
I recommend layering up to three kick drums for the best effect. One with the very low end (but cut below 30hz), mid range kick (warm and round), and transient one (snappy, clicky, whatever you like).

one CPU thing I have been doing is that I bounce stems to MP3 not wav. that has saved CPU. any feelings on this? I dont hear a drastic enough quality loss to be up in arms about it but I know it is not ideal.
