MIDI does not magically transnit audio.

You'll need to use standard audio cables coming from the Motif to an audio interface in order to record audio from the Motif to Live.

Just to wrap this up ...

I believe I "overthought" the problem. It isn't necessary to find a way to get Live to handle the switching of tracks or VSTs to be played. It can be handled quite simply by assigning tracks to different MIDI channels and changing channels at the controller .

If your tracks are on CD ... you can rip them directly to .WAV with Windows Media Player (or any one of several other things) and then just drag-n-drop into Live clips.

If your tracks are on tape, vinyl or some other non-digital form, you'll need an audio interface of some sort to record them ...

I am not certain if this helps, but some controllers - the M-Audio Axiom series, for instance - allow you to set min/max values for a given controller number ... this would amount to the same effect you are looking for by another means.

Please mentally file this the general category of "interested in what others do".

I am in the process of working up some live perfomance pieces using VSTs in LIVE plus one or more hardware instruments which will be operated standalone, not MIDI'd up except for synchronizing tempo-controlled effects ...
