Re: Why isTraktor becoming the standard for djing

I think Traktor is probably the more "tweak friendly" system, but I don't see any competitor touching Serato. Personally I've never had Serato crash or seen it crash. I hear Traktor is very stable too but I've never had a compelling reason to change what works, since I really only ask for ...

Re: Was Jeff Mills really doing something?

This is a matter of personal opinion -- I'd really like to believe that "Ableton DJing" could be as interesting as turntable DJing -- but it almost never is. I'm not sure why; it's a mysterious thing really.

Re: Scale used in Kraftwerk's Homecomputer

Just played this song in a DJ set last night. Yep...Phrygian minor. 1 3b -- -7b 2b 2b -- 1 5 (bassline) 1 3b -7b 2b 1 -- -7b -5 2b 1 (main synth line) 1 -7b 1 -7b 1 -7b 1 -7b -- 1 -7b 1 -7b 1 -7b 1 -7b (vocal) The "b" part of the song with the "marimba" arpeggiated sound is using...

I bet, however, in a permanent installation this would hold up much longer than the Akai. I bet it's easier to repair as well.

Most non motorcycle riders (for instance) don't find it necessary to hop on every motorcycle thread and talk about how they don't like motorcycles. However: for some reason, on the internet, people can't resist letting others (who didn't ask) know just how much they dislike Christianity. The Christi...

I'd call DJing and "Live PA" close cousins. They're both hard work, both take a lot of practice to do well, and both will be appreciated if they are good. In general (for my part of the world) I'd say you have a better chance of connecting with people through playing songs they know and lo...

I'd love to see an integrated Rane/Serato mixer (built on an MP44 or Empath perhaps?) with another channel or two, maybe with another USB port. They wouldn't even have to be "Serato channels" and I'd be happy. My guess is that the Rane/Serato collaboration is going to let you use Ableton a...

I love "Pack Jam" (esp the remix) and "Space Is The Place" by Jonzun Crew. Here are some of my faves in that vein: Q - "The Voice of Q" (guaranteed party killer) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZG2Be-xzII B.W.H. - "Stop" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqH4BY9o...

This whole quandary is ultimately why I went back to considerably more primitive dedicated hardware. Some things take longer on older tech of course, but I realized I was going to greater and greater lengths to make a laptop behave like a mixing desk and tape machine. Nonetheless, Godspeed to everyb...

I lived in Austin (34th and Duval) for a few months and left. I basically agree with the synopsis of it being a place where affluent white liberals congratulate each other. It is now severely gentrified as well -- working artists basically can't afford to live in the desirable areas -- and certainly...

I spent lots and lots and lots of time sorting this out -- figuring out how to unify my physical gestures with the act of music making. (Before Live I used SP-808s, as a side note.) Ultimately I concluded that you can only control a few things with any degree of nuance, so I went back to the turntab...

Great for mobile gigs. Balances right on the TT cases and the EFX-1000 sits on top of it (I use CDJs and a rotary mixer.) Doesn't increase the footprint beyond standard battle config at all. Has fixed up many a bad room for me, plus the spiffy IO options saves me having to carry extra cables and con...

Yep -- the PEQ-55. Typical of Rane, it is utterly professional, reliable, sounds impeccable and has tons of practical added-value.

Looks interesting. If I bring my own stuff to a DJ gig I use an EFX-1000 (in my opinion easily the best effects unit ever produced) and a Rane 10-operator stereo parametric which go in a master loop (my mixer has no effects loop or per-channel EQ.) This could eventually replace the parametric EQ, fo...
