I think the best way to approach college is take the minimum you can to stay full time (in the states 12 hours a semester) That way you don't get overwhelmed in that drama, and still have time to do your own personal explorations in Max/Ableton, etc... and have time to network/meet people. ... Once you reach your thirties... it's just a form of self-medication.
I know lots of great musicians who smoke weed daily, but then again I know some other ones that are pathetic and only a few years away from homelessness.

That's kinda a narrow viewpoint... Even groups like Rage agains the Machine have used samples. With samples you can get timbres that you might find hard to get in a 4 piece rock band. I wouldn't release a song with the Amen Break unless I thought it was original, but it's a great break to practice w...

Keyboard magazine is a decent magazine. I wouldn't expect them to scam you. I think they must be getting most their money from advertising, since the subscription cost is $1 per issue. If you want to learn the keyboard they have the best transcriptions. Everything from old funk players to tori amos ...

I'd go with the Waves plugin tutorial books. They were much more hands on, even though I'm not a big fan of waves plugins you can use the techniques with any setup.

Music theory is an addicting thing...
Hopefully it's just temporarily down, but the Ravenspiral guide is really nice general outline of music theory as it relates to electronica:

Trilogy (the vsti) is nice for this http://www.spectrasonics.net/instruments/trilogy.html
You'd have to use midi, but if it's just a standard bass line it's going to sound better than a transposed guitar.
