If I want the kick to be king, then I build around the kick. In other words, if the kick "disappears" when you bring up the volume of all your other tracks, then there's something wrong in your recipe.
What I like to do is start off with the kick playing solo. I get it where I think it might work ...

Here's what I want to accomplish. I'd like to map the "mute" button for a track to my midi keyboard.
