if the noise is a really loud white noise/hiss, it may be related to airport wireless use. mine goes to hiss on the output if i'm transferring a decent amount of data on the airport, and it took a lot of searching in Digi's user converence to narrow down the cause.

in the preferences for MIDI, you need to set your devices to use as a remote controls or live. From the drop down, you can select any available MIDI device displayed. In the MIDI track, you just go to the dropdown menu and select "MIDI from:" and your controller should be available on the dropdown ...

I assume that when this happens that the "Back to Arrangement" button/red light on the top of the screen is lit. If you press that button, the red light will go away, and playback will be based on what is in the arrangement view.

Is there a way of stopping the automatic jump to next scene, as this becomes extremely confusing/irritating when flicking between parts?

there is a preferences setting for this in the "misc" area: "select next scene on launch." Set that to off, and you should be good.
