Re: Can someone help diagnose my recording issues?

just get a $0.75 ground lift at Home Depot or similar - try that first before throwing any more money at the problem.

Re: Recording Midi From Roland Alpha Juno 2

nope, the Alpha Junos will not output chord memory - that is all internal. you're probably wanting to use the Juno in mono mode with chord memory and portamento, otherwise i would suggest using Live's chord plug in for what you're trying to do - but that won't work when the Juno is in monophonic and...

Re: Getting Permission to use Vocals

unless it's something high profile, i really wouldn't worry too much about it. if somehow it becomes successful enough to be an issue, you can contact the label, or they will have already contacted you with either a "cease and desist" or alternately some kind of arrangement for a legitimat...

Re: hey MPC guys... just a quick question....

it's synced to both BPM and whatever you have the quantize rate set to... 1/8, 1/8t, 1/16, 1/16t, etc, etc. - the note repeat always resolves in time with whatever's playing, as aizo said. it's impossible to play a note that's out of time, although you can come in too early or too late if you are rh...

Re: An elegant Rocksteady classic...

this 1975 version of "Stars" is my favorite, even though the original Cornel Campbell/Eternals on Studio One is great - this is a case where the original was improved upon, the arrangement is exactly the same but the recording and mix is better than the 1969 version and has the big King Tu...

Re: Does it make sense to use digital effects on analog signal?

if it sounds good, why worry about it? don't start chasing your own tail. there are loads of outboard effects units that are essentially digital - delays, reverbs, and others- going back to the 8 bit 1970's (Eventide, Deltalab, Ursa Major, etc.). personally, i wouldn't worry too much about preservin...

Re: mac or pc

i'm a Mac guy, but pretty comfortable with a PC. either one is just a tool to get something done. yes, Ableton will run at least equally well on a PC no problem - don't know about nowadays, but at one point it ran better on Windows that it did on OSX. i would have no problems at all choosing a PC to...

Re: future of experiemental music on vinyl

i've gone through a few phases of record obsessiveness over the years - in the past year or two i've been buying some of the reggae and rocksteady records that i passed up on 20+ years ago because i'm afraid at some point they'll be gone or priced through the roof (and re-presses tend to be pretty b...

Re: Awesome radio voice

This cant be that big of a secret. There has to be some way to recreate that voice. Here in the northeast (Boston MA) there is a radio station called Jammin 94.5 it plays all new "hip hop and rnb" they use the exact same voice as the one heard in the Dj Bl3nd mix i linked above. Someone m...

Re: Awesome radio voice

bump, does anyone know how to go about doing this? what do i have to do to Microsoft Sam's voice to make it sound more human like and less retard computer-ish im thinking i need to filter it. you do it by using a human with a good voice, that knows how to do voiceovers. you can't really polish a tu...

Re: Reggae/Dub - MIDI Drum Techniques

you're better off just taking some licks off of a decent sample CD.... i heard the Drum Drops Style Scott (Roots Radics) CD and it wasn't bad, certainly a lot better than a lot of purported "reggae" sample CD's i've heard. there's a "Horseman" one as well.... is it Horsemouth Wal...

Re: Reverse voice with reverb/delay ?

Fx23 gave the answer a while back. 1: reverse audio 2: apply a reverb to the sample 3: reverse audio again, so it's the right way round This is the age-old method of making this effect. Back when we all had analogue 4 tracks and 8 tracks this was pretty popular. We just flipped the tape over and ra...

Re: Tuning sampled kick drums, a necessity or not?

it definitely can help, especially if it's a kick that has a bit of sustain - tweaking it up or down can make all the difference when you have a bass line that's fighting for the same sonic space. but if it sounds right straight out of the box, that's great. i tend to experiment though, just to see ...

Re: Normalize or not to normalize one shot samples?

the fundamental issue in my mind is gain staging....if you have a sample that's really hot, the volume needs to be adjusted accordingly before it hits the next point in the chain - say, a filter or an EQ. otherwise, you have a greater possibility of painting yourself into a corner. if you boost anyt...
