White Party October Mix

Hey everyone, I want to share a mix I recently put together :) I'd like to dedicate the mix to Tarekith, who put together a great tutorial on mixing via Ableton. If you guys haven't checked it out yet, here it is: http://tarekith.com/assets/Leveling.html Here's the mix: sendspace: http://www.sendspa...

New DJ Mix

Hey everyone, I just want to share a recent DJ mix I made in Ableton: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ctzv2q Let me know what you guys think; if you like the track selection, or the DJing. I basically mapped out the tracks in Ableton; warped them; fixed any of the spikes in the track, which I learned ...

Re: seperating tracks within a song for remixing

Yeah, normally you're given the individual tracks by the original artist. It really doesn't hurt to ask the artist if you can remix his/her track, because most of the time they will agree and it will make your job of remixing much easier :) However, if that isn't an option, you could try using a fil...

Re: Master Inserts?

A reply/question for the last comment. I was previewing some of the mastering videos on Sonic Academy and they also recommended using stereo width via Sonalksis; in fact, the above recommendation of making everything 180hz and below mono is exactly what they mentioned; then of course, use stereo wid...

Bass And Kick

How do you guys go about getting a tight mix of bass and kick? For example, do you use a mult-band compressor on the kick to get it thicker/fuller? What about the bass? I've read that it's good to compress both the kick and bass prior to compressing them both together (which is also recommended). Ho...

Re: Time Warping help

Yeah, the first guy said it correctly -- you'll need to use a program like Ableton if you want to have your mp3s beatmatched. Otherwise, you'll just have to do it the traditional way -- with your ears :) Ableton can save warp markers, which you need to beatmatch your tracks. However, outside of the ...

Re: How do you get something to 320 KBPS

Another great program to use is "Audacity." I think the default setting for mp3 conversion is 320kbps. The program is free and works great -- highly recommended! ;)

Re: Newbie question about bass

It's alright, everything takes time :) Yeah, try to use an EQ (Live has EQ8 I believe) to cut out the bass, if you can't do it in arrangement (manually deleting the bass notes). For bass, you'll want to use either 1 or 2 of the EQ8 (there should be 8 different points on the line, which you can manip...

Re: Newbie question about bass

You can either leave the bass track blank in the arrangement (don't have any notes playing); you can set the speaker to "off" in the recording view (and then turn it back "on" when you want bass to be in your track); there are actually many tricks to completely removing bass. Do ...

Re: Using a Limiter for performance

Another thing -- with the limiter, try to make sure that you aren't maximizing your track any louder than -.03 or -.02.

Re: Using a Limiter for performance

I've learned a bit more about this over the last week. I recently started messing around with Izotope Ozone, and there's also a really good PDF tutorial on how to use it. Thing is, you want to make sure that you don't have any spikes in your song; doing this can take some time and technique, such as...

Re: Creating a "whoosh" sound

There should be an effect called "Noise White" under Simpler. Add that as one of your tracks, along with ping pong delay. Once you've done that, try to experiment some with the filter and frequency settings on Noise White -- I find that increasing the frequency up until the breakdown can r...

Wow... thank you guys so much for, not only listening to my track, but really taking the time to write some thoughtful feedback; I truly appreciate it... Zalo -- thanks for the fantastic visual, I'm going to experiment with that later tonight! Nick -- what compression techniques might you recommend?...
