Tim's comment about RAM is interesting: I had a huge graphics slowdown followed by bluescreen crash right after hitting the spacebar twice in arrange view. I had it happen a second time, but was able to shut down the program before it crashed the system. I can't reproduce it deliberately, so kinda h...

I like my 1.6 gig Pentium M notebook a lot. It's a Fujitsu Lifebook with 512 RAM, great 15inch screen, harddrive and optical drive are nothing special, but 4 USB ports and firewire. With a five-year warranty it was only around 1500 USD. I just looked at that and then looked back at the powerbook I w...

It sounds like if you're into the whole "illegal piracy" over the "internet" thing, you can DL a leaked version of OSX Tiger that the folks at the developer conference were given, which supposedly runs on existing intel machines. This article was discussing it: http://apple.slash...

Hi, I just picked up a keystation 61 es to augment my oxygen8. I'm using it for composition (I hopped on that Garritan Personal Orchestra group buy - woo hoo!). In the studio you can use the oxygen8 to play those 2 octaves you are missing on the 61es, but it is kinda hard to carry out a good piano p...

I like Audacity for slicing up/normalizing WAVs for impulse kits.
Seems to do a great job there, although I would have to agree on the difficulty of zooming (Live's zooming interface has me spoiled).

When you are mixing time signatures, I think the only way to get your clips fired in session view is to set global quantize to 1 beat instead of a whole bar. You can assign follow actions or use arrangement of course, but that's a different ball of wax.

Man, I hope my MD doesn't die after 13 months.. Yeah, you can use USB to transfer directly from the recorder to your computer, but then you need to use Sony's WAV converter tool to convert from the proprietary format. I just checked transfer speed. and for a 55 second file it was 33 seconds to trans...

Cheaper way to go might be finding a secondhand minidisc recorder on ebay, but you have to make sure that it accepts a mic or line input. Digital voice recorders (like business dictation recorders) are very poor quality sound even though they are cheaper. Flash-memory based field recorders are still...

I use a Sony Hi-MD minidisc recorder with a Sony stereo T-mic. Try http://www.minidisco.com Sucks---I just noticed the price on the entry-level hiMD recorder went down about 50 bucks in just around 4 months rrrrhgh. You'll need to think about a windscreen (you can put a big mic windscreen over both ...

The only one I know of is Madshifta, but it is kind of dirty sounding.
I would recommend asking (or searching) at the KVR forum:

I live at that point where beautiful dense planned urban multi-use mass-transit neighborhoods segue into stripmalls and highway sprawlsville. Local sushi franchise right next door to McDonalds.

I don't know about that retailer, that price looks way strange. M-Audio website lists them as a dealer though, which is strange because I think there are dealer agreements for some things where you agree not to advertise a price lower than a certain amount.. . If you buy Live 4 boxed, all the Live 4...

Yeah, just use the MIDI effect called "pitch".
If you want to do that with audio, you can use a plugin from tobybear called "madshifta".
