Re: Why do YOU choose Ableton?!

I was helping a friend setup a ProTools HD system in his house, and we were discussing ways to pull off elaborate live productions with electronica and acoustic performers, and he gifted me an unopened boxed copy of Live 4. The Session View and the quick creative workflow really blew me away, and go...

Re: LIVE 9 : PDC IMPROVED OR NOT ?

The tests in this thread, while well intentioned, diverted the discussion and missed the point. So from me, they got an E for effort. If they had furthered the discussion, or followed through, then I'd be applauding them and linking to them. The reason I addressed them above was because they were be...

Re: LIVE 9 : PDC IMPROVED OR NOT ?

I think for points of discussion, people should be talking about specific examples, test cases, philosophical angles, science angles, ideas for solutions, etc. no need for arguing between each other at this stage, maybe before. Kind of feels too late for that, unfortunately. What would be the point...

*SERIOUS PROPS TO petite nuage and theopilus (sp?) who have posted GREAT information and have been totally cool. I respect them for their work and focus on the topic. look for posts from theophilus specifically. With respect to theophilus for trying, those tests don't uncover any new information th...

Re: How do you use Live with other DAWs to arrange & mix ?

Instead I simply create extra audio tracks, one per original track, route each of the originals to a corresponding empty track, arm the empty tracks, and record the entire song in one pass - just using internal routing. Basically it's the same thing as creating stems, except I'm usually "mixin...

Re: How do you use Live with other DAWs to arrange & mix ?

and when rendering out tracks from Live there are issues and awkward workflows all around. Just to add, finding a workflow which minimizes the complexity is key. That's why I create arrangement tracks of any session clips first; consolidate and/or select the entire song length using an identical ti...

Re: How do you use Live with other DAWs to arrange & mix ?

For audio, effects and printable midi tracks, I place a short clip at the front of each track, consolidate then export each track indvidually, for the entire song length, so that they all line up easily. Though a bit more time consuming on the export side, the reason for indivdually exporting each t...

Re: General question about Mac from a new user

Its a macbook 13.3 inch w/ an intel core 2 duo 2.16 Ghz and 2 gigs ram that I think is maxed out as its from 2007 so Im not sure if it can do mountain lion... It can't, that system isn't compatible with 10.8. Adding to your private inquiry, with those specs and that amount of memory, your best perf...

Re: General question about Mac from a new user

Pretty much, though not exactly. There can be issues when installing an older OS revision than the one that was preinstalled with the mac when shipped from the factory. Whatever OS was installed on the Mac from the factory is the furthest back that it can go with no problems, even if an earlier OS r...

Re: PDC -- what is it? why has it never bothered me?

actually, Live has perfect audio PDC (except for a few cases where it's impossible, loops and so forth). however, they don't even attempt to compensate automation and midi. there's really no more reason for a separate 'live' and 'producer' mode at this point; all the downsides of a 'producer' mode ...

Re: PDC -- what is it? why has it never bothered me?

I agree with SDFAK. The tool should have timing accuracy. Choosing to employ it, or to deviate from it, is up to the artist.. If I was making somthing that didnt require precision that would be different. I dont want Ableton to change my work unless I ask it to. If I play a jazz mp3 on my ipod, I w...

Re: PDC -- what is it? why has it never bothered me?

I think all projects should have timing accuracy regardless whether they are big or small.. There is a degree to which delay is noticable, but timing should be tight regardless. Ambient, Jazz, Rock and Country can have imperfect timing as a key element of the sound, character and feel. John Cage, B...
