I've got the Ion and it sounds great to me. About as "analog" as you're going to get without spending $3,000+ on an Andromeda.

I'd recommend it.

I'm a fan of the Native Instruments line. The Arturia stuff is also quite good, but CPU hungry in a way that requires a pretty massive system to use fully.

NI is a great place to look, particularly FM7 and Pro53.

Mine has been reliable and a more reasonable alternative to the Akai rig selling for around $250. Paid $180 for it. Only gripe is the written support out of the box is limited, but then if you've used a MIDI trigger before it ain't rocket science.
