That is a fine recommendation (and free), but it is not a VST.
I don't know of any sound editors that are VST's.
I do editing in Sound Forge, even though I don't really use it that much.

I'm going to work on understanding them a bit more. I like the application mentioned above by leedsquiet....

I don't get the question. Load your drum sounds into Drum Racks. Each Drum rack corresponds to a MIDI note on your keyboard. That's it. Very easy. Toggle overdub when wanting to practice/add drum while things are looping. I'd recommend a pad (Korg or Akai MPD24)--since it makes things much easier.
