There was a problem with AU/VST plugins not showing up when opening previous projects... 9.0.3 was withdrawn (unless Live had auto-updated before the withdrawal).

The latest Live template and MK2 (Maschine 10.8.2) work fine with Live 8 here...

(The input and output settings have been changed though, think it's now Maschine Input/Output)

Mine is updating automatically (OSX)... I'm just loading Live and letting it do it's download thang. Once it's finished, just quit and relaunch and it's now at the new Beta (you have to do this for 32 and 64bit versions separately, or at least on Mac).

Managed to reproduce this behavior in Studio One.

Looks like an NI/FM8 issue.

I'd suggest that it's a waste of development time for Ableton to build an internal bit bridge in Live when the majority of plug-ins have or will be ported to 64bit anyway. Plus most internal bit bridges I've seen (Logic/Cubase/Reaper) have been unreliable... for now I'd recommend trying the JBridgeM...

Diva works as AU, but doesn't show up as VST. Sylenth1 will not show up as VST or AU. I'm on a mac 10.7.4 by the way. Diva isn't available as a 64bit VST. (64bit VST3 will be coming soon).
