I haven't experienced any problems with Live 9 and the Windows 10 Technical Preview so far.
Currently using Live 9.1.7 64 Bit and Windows 10 Pro Technical Preview Build 10041 (Started with Build 9879)

It is a feature of Windows. Desktop.ini maintains the icon and layout settings for each folder. +1 for the freezer trick. Clicking noises indicate a physical problem, data recovery software will not be of much use if the disk can't spin up.
