Ambient-Prog-Space music + blog

I have released 2 albums of synth-prog rock and ambient guitar looping, and started a blog about the process of making synth music. Check it out:

Re: who's using a Nord Lead 1, 2, or 3 as their Controller?

I've never played a Lead 1 or 2 (only the 3) so I can't compare. But Ironically my other synth is a Blofeld and while I've only had it a few weeks, I like it a lot so far. It sounds great and is quick & easy to program. It certainly has limitations, but for the price it's very impressive.

Re: who's using a Nord Lead 1, 2, or 3 as their Controller?

I have the Lead 3 and while I don't use it as a controller, the LED encoders should make it superior to the others in that role. It's a wonderful synth with a very intuitive interface and some wicked oscillator modulation features. Where it falls flat is its anemic filter section- sounds that rely o...

Re: Gong sound programming (synth)

I've gotten some pretty decent gong/deep cymbal sounds using the following method (on a Nord Lead 3, so try to adapt any specific functions as necessary): Oscillators: 2 FM-modulated sine waves with high FM amount (very noisy tones, but different from a pure noise source). Now use Osc2 to further FM...

Re: Dj'ing with the APC40

For effects, I had two custom racks on channels 1 and 2. If you know my 1-knob DJ effects: http://tarekith.com/assets/TarekithDJEFXv6.5.zip I'm not a DJ, but I've been working on a similar concept (lots of bang for very few controls) since I got an APC a few weeks ago. I have to say your implementa...

Re: shark week

I used to love Shark Week, but I agree it's gotten lame. Too many sensationalist survivor stories, not enough science. The one about the guy who could hypnotize sharks by rubbing their noses was sweet, though. it's been one day and you're bashing it FFS!! even then on day one you found some cool in...

Re: Free drum samples!

I'm afraid I can't really compare the NL2 and 3, as I don't have both. All I can say is I like the 3 a lot. Besides the VA stuff, it has some great sounding FM features that are very easy to use, and the interface is brilliant.

Free drum samples!

I've been sampling a lot of drum hits (and a few basses) I've made on my Nord Lead 3 so I can use them more easily, and I thought, why not share? So I put together a 20 MB ZIP file with 100 samples, free download:

Enjoy!

Re: hmmmmm Apc40

I heard back from Akai tech support, and they basically confirmed my solution- delete manual MIDI maps and disable any unnecessary Control Surface ports. I guess my Remote SL was conflicting with the APC. I'm hoping this doesn't mean ALL other control surface or manual assignments are forbidden. Thu...

Yeah, I've noticed that too. Even loading individually they still have the wrong names in Live's dropdown menu. Frustrating.

Re: Q. for Waldorf Attack VST users

Hmm. That's exactly the way I'd expect it to work, and just what I've been trying to do (changing programs per clip). Not sure why it doesn't work for me. Well, at least I know it's *possible*. Thanks. edit: maybe it's a bug with the Mac VST? Other synths respond to PC correctly. No luck with Attack...

Re: Q. for Waldorf Attack VST users

Do you mean for playing the "pitched" synth sounds, like the basses that some kits have in the upper octave? I've never tried to do that, but if Waldorf's opaque manual is to be believed, it sounds like the upper 12 voices respond to MIDI channels 1-12, respectively. So if you programmed a...

Q. for Waldorf Attack VST users

OK, this is really more of a Waldorf question, but since their manual says that all Program/Bank related issues are the responsibility of the host app, I'll ask here. I understand how to populate my bank of 16 drum kits, but I can't switch between kits except by using Live's drop-down menu (not an o...
