Is there any way to record the metronome to its own track just via the software? (ie. not routing from a hardware out to in)

I loaded up some Line6 drivers in the VPC and also loaded FL Studio just to see how it would all run. Was not too bad and it did work but I would never want to run something realtime like that.

Is Firewire 400 fast enough to do recording to an external drive (7200 RPM drive)? I know USB2 is faster but I have heard FW is more consistent. Only talking 1-2 tracks simultaneously.
