Yes, in fact using ready made synths is cheating.
You should be carving your sounds from the fundamental building blocks of 1s and 0s. That is the only way to true artistry

Re: PC Netbook/Ultrabook for Ableton Live?
I am using Korg M1 and Wave Station plus NI FM8 on a netbook. Mainly I use the netbook when I am on holiday, just take a little keyboard.
I didn't install Ableton because the screen is quite small but I have Audiomulch.
It runs fine as an occasional set up, wouldn't want to use it for long periods.

Re: MOOC course on 'Critical listening for studio production'
I did a couple of courses on Coursera. They are introductory courses and towards the end you get a 'if you want to know more sign up for our ... course' but I learned some useful stuff so I am happy.
Plus if you start and decide that it is too simple/ you are too busy it is no loss to just drop out

MOOC course on 'Critical listening for studio production'
A while ago there was a thread about Coursera courses.
I have just found a course on Future Learn (a UK MOOC platform) entitled 'Critical listening for studio production' https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/cri ... production
I hope this is useful

No financial interest in either of these.
Just like to take advantage of a freebie so let others know about these.

Free courses - intro to production and critical listening
An intro to production course is coming up soon on Coursera: https://www.coursera.org/course/musicproduction I did this the last time it ran. AS the title says it is an intro but I found it quite interesting and learned quite a lot of stuff. A group of universities in the UK have now jumped on the b...

Also, install ableton on your work laptop so you can use it given the slightest oppertunity. If any body asks tell them it is a new sort of spreadsheet
