Well I´ve experienced some eratic behavior when using qf610 without bus power, like the qf software mixer not responding when switching between apps. But that was on my desktop. I dont own a laptop yet. (But I will in a week ..black macbook.. YEAH

I´ve used my quatafire on a mbp and it was really smooth. It is an excellent card with surprisingly good converters! - no internal routing though ... yet.
About the bus power...hmm theoretically you should´nt have any problem. But I would not use any firewire card without socket power.
