I'm not sure if it is the best way, but I do the following:

Load a long loop/song into a clip slot -turn warping off. If the song is of a consitent meter I use the tap tempo function to get the bpm close for the project and the song file.

Turn Warping back on. This usually makes it easier to see ...

My system is almost identical to yours- even the 450 DP Mac G4. I use a MOTU MTP for my MIDI though. The Emagic interface that Mateo suggested is a great piece of gear that you couldn't go wrong with. I would also suggest looking at the MidiMan line as their interfaces are said to be good. Have you considered a firewire interface?
