Re: MTC slaving Ableton to Pro Tools on separate machines

Former Chicagoan here. Go Cubbies. :D It's been a while since I did this, but I never had much luck with Live as a slave. The best sync I ever got by far was by recording a track of SMPTE/LTC as audio and playing it out of a dedicated out on my audio interface. Into the LTC input of PT or whatever a...

Re: PLease provide a list of abletons no -latency plug ins?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that unless the plug-in has an explicit lookahead parameter -- like the limiter or compressor -- then you can safely assume that it has zero samples of latency. The only exceptions I can imagine offhand would be the EQ in high-quality mode (that is, if the high-q...

Re: Very Bad Ableton Latency

What 3dot said. If you go to audio preferences and set your buffer depth, then the input and output latencies will be reported to you. Those are no different than for logic -- they are a function of the hardware audio interface. The difference with Logic is (only) this: in Logic you can load up more...

Re: I give up, Ableton, I really do. PDC/timing/hardware issues,

If you want for MIDI/audio to and from external hardware synths to be properly lined up with audio "inside" Live, you must use the External plug-in, even if you don't monitor its output . That is, even if you monitor the synth directly. Insert the plug in the MIDI track, choose some random...

Re: FIX latency in line with other DAWs?

The OP's post at gearslutz (which goes into more detail) says that Live has a "philosophy" concerning latency that differs from other DAWs. Most of the recent responses say something like: get a better computer or interface for lower latency. How is that a philosophy of Ableton's? I still ...

Re: Question for music theory fans - chord progression analysis

>> Dm7 - Bdim7 - A#maj7 - Am7 - Cdim7 couple things to notice. the first three chords are roughly speaking a Dm triad with a descending bassline: Dm - Dm/B - Dm/Bb The Cdim7 wants (strongly) to resolve to something, like Gm7. That gives the overall progression a turn like Dm7 - Am7 - Gm7, something ...

Nightmare. The worst music software company buying the best music software company!? There's almost nothing that would make me walk away from Live at this point; Ableton being purchased by NI is an exception. Terrible interfaces; a past littered with abandoned and half-developed products; terrible c...

Re: Exporting stems issue

some things to look for: when you're bouncing, assuming you're using the 'render' dialog, make sure that the start and end points are what you think they should be. turn warping off (by default, in preferences, if you like, but otherwise on the clips themselves when you drag them into Live). pull ou...

Re: Ableton has white noise on idle and this exports with tracks

Some of Live's plug-ins put out sound (noise) even when the transport isn't moving and no audio is going into them. The 'vinyl distortion' plug-in is one. There might be others, I can't recall offhand. On top of that, if you happen to compress the output of such a plug or do something similar to bri...

Re: Studio One is leaving Ableton in the dust.

Can't you do that with Live? I don't see the phone has anything to do with Live vs Studio One. You have a vocal melody on Soundcloud. You can import that into Live and create the Midi from it with Melodyne. I don't see the difference. Of course you can do it with Live and Melodyne. And it will work...

Re: gate type of tool needed

Live's gate is a pretty straightforward gate, as far as I've seen. But in this case you need to use it with "Flip" turned on, with side-chaining. Flip mode means that it turns *off* when the (sidechain) input goes over a certain level for a certain duration, with release, etc, i.e., the op...

Re: Sustain Pedal and OVR mode

when I do stuff like this, I insert a M4L device that converts sustain pedal (CC64) messages into note duration, i.e., longer notes rather than a CC message. Makes it much easier to edit the stuff afterward. I posted a device that does this to the Max for Live site: http://www.maxforlive.com/library...

Re: iOS MIDI: Folks we have GAME CHANGING NEWS

The dream I have is to show up at a gig with my Stick, an iPad, an interface, my SoftStep foot controller, and a smile on my face. I use a laptop because I fucking HAVE to - not because I want to. But the laptop isn't very big compared to any of those other things. If you had a real keyboard contro...

Re: Why would you ever want 'Vol < Vel' value to be not 100%?

When you play a sound live (from a keyboard), there's often too much dynamic range if you have vel>vol set to 100%. That is, the softest notes are too soft in relation to the loudest. Think of vel>vol as a kind of compressor that is triggered by velocity.
