Re: -18db digital = 0db analog
This is all about proper gain staging, especially between the analog and the digital world. Example: Route a 1khz tone signal from live out to an external preamp (or another OTB-unit), out from the preamp, and into live again through your interface. Open up the volume of the signal so the meter on t...

Re: Substractive EQ is essentially the same as additive EQ?
you're mixing(pun) up two different steps here. 1.) production - when you're PRODUCING and SOUND designing you're allowed to boost whatever you want. 30 years ago this would be done on a guitar amp, bass amp, etc before it even hit the mixing board. This is the guitarist/producer's call on how brig...

Re: Record reverb
I see it is a unanimous decision to keep it dry! Now I just need to find out the best way to use my hardware effects with Live. The forum SEARCH option is a little bugger trying to dig up an answer on routing hardware effects. This is fairly easy, and can be done in numerous ways. One of the simple...

Re: Gain structure & Volume automation Best Practice
Would compression on the master channel not be the simplest option? Well, personally i never use compression/limiting on the master channel. Prefer to leave that for the mastering engineer. But you are right, in mastering, controlling the dynamics, this can be fixed, but i prefer to get all the lev...

Re: Gain structure & Volume automation Best Practice
automate the utility gain knob is definitely the way to go  Are there any drawbacks to doing this automation on the utility gain directly on the master? Because i do this now, on almost every instrument, or groups, but it quickly becomes very complicated when dealing with a lot of tracks and ...

Re: Gain structure & Volume automation Best Practice
I would never automate volume. If I wanna tweak it I would use Utility or the volume of the device or something. That way you are still free to tweak the overall volumes later. I also have stuff in groups, and they all go into a submix, so I can tweak the volume of those or automate them (with a ut...

Gain structure & Volume automation Best Practice
Hi Everybody, I have a question about best practice when it comes to gain structuring and volume automation. I have a song with a heavy hitting intro that for example consists of: Several synths Drums Guitar Layered bass Which, when played, gives me about -6db on the main output. Then, in the chorus...

Re: Porting from a PC to MAC
Just a little update on the PC to MAC conversion. Installed ableton, worked like a charm. Got all my VST-instruments up. Installed drivers to the sound card. Connected the sound card... wait. No firewire on my macbook. ... So, sold my macbook today. Off to get a Macbook Pro, with firewire! The funny...

Re: Porting from a PC to MAC
Thanks for the advice guys! I am feeling more secure about the switchover already.
Just have to get a hold of the mac versions of some of the more obscure VST`s, but that should be okay.
Will be great to finally swith my music over the a MAC, which i have been hesitating for the last two years

Re: Focusrite 24PRO + Ableton live problem
i'm running saffire le with no problems at all. i actually really love that little interface. could you describe the distorted sound more? does it sound like all the sudden everything is heavily bit reduced... like running it through a 2 or 4 bit effect? or does it sound like an overloaded circuit?...
