So when I create a max preset, just for fun, I used the presentation mode and made a neato little interface. When I open it in Ableton, it only opens in the edit mode, and there doesn't seem to be a way to switch it to presentation?

Is this normal?

After I add a Max device, if I right click on the device header and choose to manage device file, Live crashes with a serious program error.

Umm, I went to the following URL by choosing to do an offline registration and clicking the link that shows up in the instructions box. It took me to:

https://www.ableton.com/account/licenses?version=8.1b3

and got the "Authorize this Computer" button, which seems to have done the trick.
