I connect via firewire using an m-audio audiophile breakout box to my mbp and have never suffered drop out or crackle.

Usually the quality of the cd-r. Try another brand.
Could be your car cd player needs a clean? You can buy these cleaner disks that have a wee brush attached that will clean the laser head. I fixed my reader with one when it stopped reading disks.

It doesn't do it in the Midi Map Mode and I don't *think* it is assigned in the Mackie Mode.
Can it be done in Live 8?

Both will appear in Preferences as selectable as your I/O devices but only one can be selected at a time for audio. Unlike MIDI where your various devices are available concurrently.
