I've got clicks problems with audio in the next conditions:
64 bytes buffer - cpu load > 40%
128 bytes buffer - cpu load > 70%
1024 bytes buffer - cpu load >90%
My system is Centrino 1.4, 700 Mb, Echo Audiofire 8, Ableton 5, WinXPSP2
The most important thing in WinXP tuning is set Control Panel ...

Unfortunately both variants do not work: ableton doesn't allow insert any effect plugins before virtual instruments (maybe need trying complex routing between tracks?) and midiox locks all midi-ports and they aren't available in ableton after that.
So it seems like I should think about my midi ...

you can create one easily in synthedit , it prolly won't get recognised as midi plugin , but you can drop it on a miditrack as vsti plugin and route the midi output of the plugin to a new channel

If you are ready for additional firewire specific ASIO latency bias (up to +7 mc in addition to buffer size related latency) then the any good firewire device is the good choice (Audiofile looks to be good). But if the latency is too critical for you I would recommend looking at cardbus interfaces ...
