Re: Extracting a groove - what happens exactly?

The extracted grove merely represents where strong and weak beats lie within the bar. Real drummers and bassists are not metronomic, they tend to move ahead of and behind the beat in spots. Groove extraction analyzes that and shifts the timing and velocity of your tracks to mimic that. OK, but what...

How to duplicate a track without clips on it?

Say I've got an instrument playing on a midi track. Now i want to make a new track that will also play the same instrument. How do i achieve this? I could use the "duplicate" command, but then i also get all the clips duplicated, which isn't what i want. I also tried making a new midi track, but whe...

Is Ableton clever in terms of system usage?

What i mean by this is: say i'm making song which is split in to two sections, let's call them section A & section B. If i have completely different instruments and FX in the B section, will Ableton somehow mute or turn off the A devices (while playing section B)? Or to put it another way, are instr...

Extracting a groove - what happens exactly?

I'm messing around with grooves and groove extraction for the first time. I've checked the manual but see no explanation of what exactly happens when you extract a groove. Say, for example, i have a 4 bar hi-hat clip which i played in live. Imagine that some of the hi-hat hits a played were bang in ...

Re: Quantize undo?

Thanks a lot! Just tried it and it works as you describe. However i find it very weird that it applies the quantize (when you don't commit) but doesn't visually update it! What was the thinking behind that i wonder? Maybe you can also answer me this: is there a way to nudge the position of midi note...

Quantize undo?

New to the program, just trying to get my head 'round it! About quantize: is it correct that (when editing midi clips) there is very limited quantize undo functionality ? It seems like once you've quantized your midi, there's no way to go back to the original timing, unless you immediately press "un...

Re: Please explain clips to a Neanderthall!

Thanks for the replies! 3dot provided a great explanation of clips. Let's dig a bit deeper so you get a handle on this. First, do you understand the difference between Session and Arrange views? And do you understand how clips work in Session vs. how they work in Arrange? Once you understand those b...

Question about quantize:... is this possible............?

Hi guys, I'm sincerely hoping that this is possible in Ableton: I record 32 bars of a percussion part. Obviously my timing varies a bit (too much) throughout the 32 bars, but if one were to average out what i played, you'd have my intended swing / groove for the whole piece of music. Now, as i'm pro...

Moving midi events by tiny amounts?

Back in my days of using Logic, i remember i could nudge a midi note by a miniscule amount, like 1/2000 of a beat or something silly. I'm new to Ableton and i don't see a way to do this, other then to zoom right in with snap turned off and then move your midi note. Although that works ok, i'd rather...

Re: Something to make all of you sound designers think

This how i'd do it:

I'd just go to a club and record it with a hand-held recorder. Having a DJ mate would help. It'll sound way more realistic and there would be a greater contrast when you switch to the full-range sound.

How to change the tempo in the middle of a song?

Say i have a track that's at 120BPM, but after one minute i have a breakdown, and i wanted to slow the tempo slightly to increase the tension..... .....how do i achieve this? I imagine there's several ways to do this in Ableton, but what's the simplest, most painless? Is there some kind of tempo tra...
