Re: win 7 crashes randomly

Does it crash if you just leave it on and don't do anything? What is the nature of the crash if you are getting a blue screen of death BSOD check this out. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows7/resolving-stop-blue-screen-errors-in-windows-7 you can also check the system logs for error messages...

Re: Win7 or Win 8 next 5 years?

I was on 8 and reverted back to 7. Problem was the Focusrite firewire support for the Liquid 56 just didn't work. The Windows 7 disk worked like a charm. My sense is that if you have an newer USB sound interface Windows 8 is a viable platform. The real problem you are experience is the pain that occ...

Re: importing and then exporting mp3 - does it affects sound?

MP3 files use a lossy compression algorithm. This means that when you open it up, edit it save it as a MP3 and them open it up, edit it and save it as an MP3 it losses some of the original information. The solution for production is to convert to a wave or aiff format before working with it. Then th...

Re: That periodic 'what laptop' thread ... plus firewire

My experience is with a Focusrite Liquid 56 and a SIIG F/W card. Just did not work reliably in Windows 8 64 bit. Did some research and according some comments on the RME forum it looks like MS just dropped F/W, made the legacy drive unavailable in Windows 8. RME released a new driver for there f/w p...

Re: do you have Live 32 or 64 bit?

New stuff in 64 bit Live 9.1 but still have Live 8 32 bit in case it is needed to open a project. Which was need since the 64 bit version was intermittently not loading a project. I would say that Live 8 64 bit is fragile. Haven't enough experience with Live 9 yet to comment.

My experience with Ableton support has been very positive. Copy protection is a PITA but then so is theft if you are a developer.

Re: Which Windows 7 services safe to stop?

For security purposes the first thing that I do is turn off the network adapter. If the adapter is off, you don't need a firewall so that service can be stopped. Since you can't go on the network you can only get a virus through physical media like a usb memory stick. If you have a second machine wi...

Re: SSD: Will it help give my laptop some life support?

You are correct in understanding that an SSD doesn't reduce CPU load significantly. First thing I would do is look to see if the little Disk activity light is flashing when you are experiencing the glitches. If the Disk light is flashing away then an SSD might help. If not your bottle neck is likely...

Re: CPU hungriness of Live

The first thing that occurs to me is that you need to standardize your test environment. We can be pretty certain that the approach to measuring CPU in Reaper is different than the one used in Ableton. Can you try the same experiment but this time show what the cpu utilization in the Windows task ma...

Very cool video

One has to remember is one is talking about success in music or success in the music business. As the video points out. They are not the same thing. Nor are they mutually exclusive.

Re: Anyone here making metal music with Live?

Just mixing a prog metal album. Recorded the beds in Ableton Drums, guitar, Korg synth. Tracked the vocals and put down some more guitars.

Didn't play to a click so the tempo setting is meaningless. Which makes editing a few drum beats more interesting.

Re: Who has dared to follow their Ableton passion?

If you look around you can find interviews with Philip Glass who worked day jobs to support his music. Here is one for example article. http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/interviews/philip-glass-i-think-im-built-for-this-kind-of-life-i-train-like-an-athlete-1688870.html The key point fr...

thegoodsirjames, There have already being many useful ideas expressed and some good advice. Your question is really not about music at all, It is about how to live a happy life. I will be 61 next month. In the seventies I had a run at the music business but gave up because I was tired of starving. A...
