Re: Best way to use Ableton AND Logic?

If you're happy with the workflow in Live why both with Logic? To me Live's interface simply rules for sound design and composition. But I too find Logic's track automation much easier to work with, and many of Logic's effects are cleaner to my ears as well. So like the OP I tend to write in Live a...

Re: Okay is it just me, or is the Abes summing bus kinda bad?

It may be processed internally at 32 bit but it's still monitored at 24 or 16 depending on system output settings. If all output settings are equal between monitoring the project and monitoring the export it should sound the same. I don't have any wisdom to offer re export settings, since I never us...

Re: speakers against a wall

foam will work for high frequencies but do nothing for bass which in a small room is the biggest issue. +1 unless you've got a LOT of it - even 4" of foam directly against the wall still isn't doing a whole lot below 250hz. acoustically you should be about 38% back from the front wall with speakers...

Re: what's the best version software for notebook 1.2 Ghz

You have a conundrum - no looper till 8, but the min recommended speed for 8 is 1.8ghz plus 2gig min RAM. If you're going to try 8, I'd suggest finding a pre-M4L version if you can (8.0.x I think). My entirely unscientific guess is that the early versions might be a bit more forgiving of a slower CP...

Re: Envelopes in arrangement view...

My bad - I'm still running ver 7 and 'group tracks' isn't yet an available option. On ver 8 group tracks should be the simplest method - again, as 3dot already mentioned.

Both methods offer post-automation volume control (unlike adding the utility plug-in) and should do the trick.

Re: Envelopes in arrangement view...

This drove me nuts when I first ran into it. Simplest solution is to create an additional audio track. Set it's input to 'no input'. Set the output of the vocal track to the new audio track. Now you can use the volume control on the new audio track independently from the vocal track's automation. Ba...

Re: 8 bit 11khz? help on exporting in this fashion

No prob. BTW, there's nothing wrong with lo-fi production techniques in general, but bit reduction wouldn't be my first choice unless you were really trying to capture that 80's Commodore SID vibe. "Re-amping" tracks either via room miking or using my trusty old 4-track has worked really well for me...

Re: 8 bit 11khz? help on exporting in this fashion

they seem to not want everyone to know, but as a producer, Im so curious to what will happen to my sound, I must experiment. so Ive bben asking anyone who knws how, how do you export 8bit /11khz in ableton 8 "They seem to not want everyone to know" yet they published that technique on the internet?...

Re: is Wavelab the only editor that really works with Ableton "e

Peak and Peak LE also work just fine (on Mac) but I too really like (and now miss) Sound Forge. Not sure I'm ready to try Parallels on my old G4 though! Hermanus has it right though, what can be done in an external sample editor to an internal sample that you can't just do directly in Live? Just cur...

Re: Spending a day recording my own acoustic samples - any tips?

I wouldn't decide on a single recording setup and use it for everything unless all of your sounds are similar and will be used in a similar context. Some sounds might work better using a single close mic and recorded in mono. Others might benefit from a bit more room sound and/or active panning via ...

Re: Decorative bass traps/room treatment?

Most around-the-house absorbers won't help a whole lot. Owens-Corning makes semi-rigid fiberglass boards in varying densities - 703 is the most commonly used version for DIY. It's also what the ReadyTraps use in their panels, and they sell it raw for $70 for 6 2x4' panels. If you look you could prob...

Re: How will a lot of surfaces in a room affect acoustics?

I just don't want the sounds traveling too much through the walls, annoying other residents. :P So I figured if I could absorb as much as possible by oddly dispersed furniture, might as well do that. I know headphones are probably my best bet, but listening to speakers feels 1000x better. Yeah, for...

Re: How will a lot of surfaces in a room affect acoustics?

Tables, lamps & TV's will do absolutely nothing to low frequencies in any size room. They might have a very small diffusive affect on high frequencies, but it wouldn't be controllable and probably wouldn't even be perceptible. Couches and mattresses might help with high & low frequency absorption a ...

Re: Anybody regret their Yamaha HS 50M monitor purchase?

I've got to challenge the assertion that ANY monitors in this price range are sonically neutral, or even the idea that neutral monitors are always the ultimate goal for mixing anyway. Everyone knows the NS10's certainly aren't neutral, yet were (and to a certain degree remain) widely used by many pr...

Re: Anybody regret their Yamaha HS 50M monitor purchase?

Good friend has both the NS10's and now the HS-80m's. They are similar in some ways, but overall I find the HS-80m's soundstage to be a bit two dimensional and boxy. More so even than the NS-10's, which surprised me. That being said for rock & pop stuff they actually translate pretty well, but I def...
