Re: 15 yrs of dig. audio, pops & crackles still driving me nuts

Dribble... starting to feel like I'm flogging a dead horse. Apologies for that. Last night I tested most, if not quite all, of the recommendations above. Some for better, some for worse, but none quite 100%. (Testing is just the worst, since the only conclusive news is the bad news, and I've just be...

Re: 15 yrs of dig. audio, pops & crackles still driving me nuts

Hey - I don't want to be picky but 15 years of pops and crackles? Bearing in mind cubase vst (no vst instruments) was released around 1996 (v3.0 mac only) and before that digital audio on computers required expensive cards with propriety drivers in some cases or only offered basic audio functionali...

Re: 15 yrs of dig. audio, pops & crackles still driving me nuts

Thanks again, to both of you. casiblake, I will put the Delta back on the list for serious consideration. Wow, never thought I'd find my way back to that card! :)

Re: 15 yrs of dig. audio, pops & crackles still driving me nuts

Wow, thank you! I was aware of some of this, but certainly there's nothing to take the wrong way there. Very generous of you to take the time and compile your thoughts, these links, etc. The Gigabyte-specific drivers seemed a likely solution at first glance. I admit I can get pretty careless about m...

Re: 15 yrs of dig. audio, pops & crackles still driving me nuts

casiblake, thanks for your interest and help. My mobo is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R. It was a highly-recommended mobo at the time. I am a little suspicious of its onboard audio drivers, but I've disabled them without any improvement. I don't have any PCI stuff handy, unfortunately. I do have another Fi...

Re: 15 yrs of dig. audio, pops & crackles still driving me nuts

Just realized I still have to try dancerchris' advice re: the video acceleration slider. I thought this was very likely the solution (until I noticed my HDD doing the watusi) but I couldn't find it in Win7 (used to be more obvious in XP.) Just noticed he posted pretty detailed instructions, though,...

Re: Tenori On is frakkin' EXPENSIVE!!!!! what's the deal????

The pricing is very unlike Yamaha. Usually their products, aside from being mostly great, offer considerable bang for the buck. Not bashing the Tenori-on, which I've never personally used, but it seems like it's got a certain Zeitgeist/ fashion-appeal which Yamaha is trying to cash in on, above and ...

Re: MIDI timing stability...

I wonder if this is related to the fact that it is pretty well impossible to record a MIDI drum groove into Live, real-time, using my Alesis ControlPad.

(The ControlPad is sending MIDI via it's own USB-based interface and a generic Windows driver. I haven't tested it with any other MIDI interfaces.)

Re: 15 yrs of dig. audio, pops & crackles still driving me nuts

Hmm, "nothing serious". But it must have been something. Maybe something you weren't even aware of, like a new driver that came down as part of a Windows update... something. I know with PCs it can seem like things happen for no reason, and they may as well for all the control you have over it, but ...

Re: 15 yrs of dig. audio, pops & crackles still driving me nuts

Tom, I think the first thing I'd consider are the external drives, and the relatively slow 5400RPM drive. But realistically, unless you're stressing the system with lots of simultaneous audio tracks, a modern 5400RPM drive shouldn't present a problem. When you say "I never had issues, however, until...

Re: 15 yrs of dig. audio, pops & crackles still driving me nuts

I did some experimenting. Seems the only way I can get good, consistent behavior out of this specific build is by disconnecting from our network. Should have been the first thing I tried, I know, and I have made a point of running this way in the past. But these days I use my audio PC for practicing...
