Re: 15 yrs of dig. audio, pops & crackles still driving me nuts
Really? You may be right but with coax S/PDIF for instance I think there is a good case to be made for well shielded cables at least. You can quite clearly hear problems with bad S/PDIF connections. Don't know about audio over USB though. Fair enough. I'd say an inadequately shielded cable is prope...

Re: 15 yrs of dig. audio, pops & crackles still driving me nuts
Again, thanks for all the replies. That's mainly what I'm looking for - the "you're not alone/ you're not crazy" feedback. Have you ever tried a new, really nice USB cable? Seriously. Many of these issue might be traced to a cheap, or even mid-range cable. Ean at djtechtools.com sells one that you m...

Re: 15 yrs of dig. audio, pops & crackles still driving me nuts
15 years of gripe when you could've just had a mac  I'll admit macs are looking better every day, but there have been points in the past 15 years where a whole lot of options in software and hardware were PC-only. If anything, I wish I'd just sat the first 10 years out LOL. seriously though, i...

Re: 15 yrs of dig. audio, pops & crackles still driving me nuts
Thanks for the replies. Well, most of them anyway. ;) "First of all, what kind of interface are you using for the audio?" I've used everything over the years. Recently I'm bouncing between a Mackie Onyx Satellite and a Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1. (I also have a Firepod, but I've only run tha...

15 yrs of dig. audio, pops & crackles still driving me nuts
Partly just a gripe, but also an invitation for advice, hunches, comiseration, general musing: I've been at this for a long, long time. I've been building Windows-based DAWs since the early 90's, and wasting more time tweaking them than I care to think about. Now it's 2010, I've been through plenty ...

Re: Do you reckon Native instruments are going to build a daw. .
I love the sound of NI products, but they also frustrate the hell out of me, as does their customer support record. I'm with UncleAge on this one. I can't even begin to fathom how the original poster put NI and "bug free and stable" together. They're brilliant developers, but spit and polish is not ...

Re: USB audio interfaces that work with Windows 7
So, dug in with the Onyx Satellite last night and it's solid, with a couple of caveats. (There are *always* caveats.) First is that I was getting the old snap-crackle-and-pop treatment during mouse movement, changes in graphics, etc. and managed to improve matter by doubling my input buffer size. Fa...

Re: USB audio interfaces that work with Windows 7
So by last night I was fed up, uninstalled the Audio Kontrol drivers. (Nice coincidence that this thread popped up the same week my system started griefing me.) I had a Mackie Onyx Satellite in storage, which I had purchased because of its alledged compatibility with Vista 64-bit last year. (Mackie ...

Re: USB audio interfaces that work with Windows 7
Not really advice, but this site is useful as a reference for compatibility... http://rainrecording.co.uk/windows-watch/ Extemely helpful - thank you! Can you post your computer specs? I was considering the Audio Kontrol but have heard about this from more than one person. It's just a homegrown PC ...

Re: USB audio interfaces that work with Windows 7
...sounds like a ring modulator... I've started having this same problem (and for the record, I think this qualifies as a "terrible issue" :o ) with my Native Instruments Audio Kontrol, along with all kinds of weirdness ("Device is already in use" type stuff) when I try to reconfigure sampling rate...

Re: placebo tweaks
I know I'm not the only one that does this I wonder how much time I've wasted over the years on imaginary gain structure Ha ha ha... yes, compressors in particular are "time machines". i.e. Just started turning the knobs and ... woah ... you're in the future. End results are typically imperceptibly...

High performance tablet PCs for Win7?
Apologies if this has come up already (and I imagine it has), but is anyone aware of ANY manufacturer who produces a fast, decent-sized, multi-touch tablet PC? I know Apple doesn't make anything that quite fits the bill yet, but it seems with Windows 7 and all the hype about multi-touch monitors som...

Re: Tube Preamps
Are you sure the Art Tube MP you already have doesn't just need a new tube? I think there's a 12AX7 in there, which would set you back about $10. Standard maintenance costs for a tube preamp no matter what you decide on.

Re: Other than the session view wat makes live a performing prog
Ha! So brilliant. I have been overthinking this problem for YEARS and now I see how easily that would work. Wireless even, and cheap! Not very durable, but then, who cares! Thanks.old qwerty keyboard with most of the caps torn off
