Re: the topic of topics: MIDI vs AUDIO ("what is music"?)

Universal rules of grammar... lol. Grammar is not universal. You are wrong. Grammar is universal, it is in our brain, because we are humans. See Noam Chomsky studies. It has nothing to do with local traditions. Ugh... You completely misunderstand Noam Chomsky then. He's not saying each language fol...

Re: the topic of topics: MIDI vs AUDIO ("what is music"?)

Music itself is subjective, but it only has meaning to the listener when when it is heard. I don't care how much you go on about language or code. Music does not need rules to make sense to the listener. Regional music each has it's own set of rules, sure, but it doesn't mean you need to adhere to t...

Re: the topic of topics: MIDI vs AUDIO ("what is music"?)

IMO the difference between MIDI and audio is like the difference between a recipe and a meal. In that analogy would the word "music" be used more like the word "recipe", "food" or "cuisine"? Personally I tend toward "cuisine" Which I feel includes the recipe the food and the enjoyment of the food. ...

Re: the topic of topics: MIDI vs AUDIO ("what is music"?)

music is what you can read, write, edit, change, play. It is a language, a code, it has a "grammar": universal. And if you want you can play it with tools (the instruments or your voice). But it is not always necessary. Infact a musician can "think" music. MIDI tracks are musically related (because...

Re: the topic of topics: MIDI vs AUDIO ("what is music"?)

macmurphy you say you are trying to have a serious discussion but then you say that audio is not music. well, audio is not music. Infact deaf people know what music is and many of them can percieve it. If music was audio, every sound would be music. Music is not the sound, music is the code. Some s...

Re: the topic of topics: MIDI vs AUDIO ("what is music"?)

I can't even bring myself to read this whole thread. The basic argument is being used over and over from what I can tell. "Audio cannot be manipulated musically, and therefore isn't music." Nonsense. By that logic, none of the songs you hear on the radio can be considered music. None of the records ...

Re: Do you think Ableton will launch an iPad version of AL?

9V: professional |pr??fe sh ?nl| adjective [attrib.] of, relating to, or connected with a profession Clearly, as the iPad is connected with the music profession, it is professional equipment. Now, let's look at how you're defining toy: toy |toi| noun an object, esp. a gadget or machine, regarded as ...

Re: Think Ableton is really going bankrupt and out of biz?

I have recently started to wonder how much money they have in the coffers. They've gone a long time without an influx of upgrade dollars. Of course, we can postulate how many new users they get and how many live packs they manage to sell. However, statistics will show that for every X amount of legi...

Re: ableton 9 announced at summer namm show!

It's like a bad joke that only one person thinks is funny. He keeps telling it over and over, laughing hysterically while everyone else in the room barely manages to choke out a courtesy laugh.

I suppose it's all good. I've been that guy before too.

Re: Mouse Trackball?

+1 for Kensington Expert Mouse. If you go with this one, I recommend using "Mouseworks" instead of "TrackballWorks" for managing it's preferences. It's been a long time since I mucked about with TrackballWorks, but if I recall correctly, you can't assign key commands to mouse clicks. You can do so w...

Re: OSX Spaces with Live VSTs

I wish... One of the big let downs of spaces for me. As soon as you switch to the space without Live, the application loses focus. Once Live loses focus, the plug-in windows go into hiding. I suppose it is possible, if you can somehow get OSX to keep it's focus on Live in more than one space. Or may...

M4L/Csound - Hadron Particle Synth

A new granular synth/effect for Max for Live and Csound came out last week. A VST version for OSX and Windows is said to be on the way as well: http://www.partikkelaudio.com/downloads You will need Csound and the Csound max object in order to use it within M4L: http://csound.sourceforge.net/ http://...

This business model reminds me of Cartmanland...
