I do a combination often - playing but with the scale midi effect on and quantizing the notes to some extent or another. With a 'little' help I can play pretty well!

Zebra is the best overall synth around as far as I am concerned, which includes bass use.

Usability and visual feedback is better in some 3rd party EQs. I demoed EQuick and was really impressed with how much more tactile it felt to work with.
