Re: Best way to reduce master output to -6db?

If we use the master fader or a utility on the master fader to reduce the volume, then I'm guessing it'll put the ratio/level out of whack, and will affect the crest value, meaning the Master Engineer won't be able to get the best out of your piece of music, which is what this is about. So despite ...

Re: Where does sound designing come in?

You're right, it is a personal thing. But I like to get any musical content done first then focus on the specific sounds after. I can spend hours tweaking sounds so I like to know that a musical idea is worth it before I invest the time. I used to work the other way around wasting time getting somet...

Re: Best way to reduce master output to -6db?

Do a phase cancellation test and check for yourself. I'm not sure a phase cancellation test would prove anything anyway, apart from you having two tracks out of phase. If you bounce down a track, copy it on to 2 tracks and stick one out of phase, of course it will cancel the other out, no matter ho...

Re: SOUND QUALITY COMPARISON, Live versus Logic

Its not scientific, but here is a video comparing the various warping / stretching methods of various DAWs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cFwIsudKvo

I don't know what scientific tests you could realistically do because its very subjective with no right or wrong end result.

Re: Question regarding effect preset automation

Set up an Effect Rack and create a chain for each of your Songs / Scenes. You then need to set up the chain selector so that only one chain is active at a time. You can then add an empty clip into each scene that has an envelope defined for the Effect Rack's chain selector (obviously selecting the c...

Re: Best way to reduce master output to -6db?

If you are hitting the red on the master fader, you probably won't hear any clipping that's occurring until you render the track. You also won't have much dynamic range. By pulling the Master fader down, you're just turning down a hot signal with reduced dynamic range and making it worse, so you'll...

Re: Best way to reduce master output to -6db?

Can someone please explain what the technical difference is between a) reducing the master fader. b) turning down a Utility on the master track. c) turning down all tracks/groups individually. From my understanding of Live's internal processing these three things will all do pretty much exactly the ...

Re: Workaround for not having Pre/Post switch on Track Sends?

Create two return tracks and duplicate your desired effect/effects on each, then set return A to "pre" and return B to "post". Now if you want a track to send pre fader you turn up send A, or send B for post fader. If you want to be anal about not duplicating the effects in the return tracks then yo...

Re: do you normalize?

I always normalize (and dither) when exporting my final mix to 16 bit wav. It's the gateway between the pristine, 32 bit, floating point world inside Live and the nasty, dirty 16 bit, integer world outside. I don't want to be wasting any bits. Normalizing does NOT make better use of the bit range a...

Re: Quantization HELP !!

I find it very easy to beatmatch to an outside source if I have the global nudge buttons mapped (they are by default to the apc 40) and have the cue level mapped to the fine control (right hand side of the) tempo.... Yeah I guess that doesn't sound too difficult, I might give that another go. I com...

The manual is also quite good. Don't read it cover to cover, just check out the relevant sections to whatever facet you're currently exploring. I would say you definitely should read the manual cover to cover. Its not exactly a big manual and its easy to read and follow. Possible to read it all in ...

Re: Quantization HELP !!

When you tap tempo while ableton's global transport is stopped, 4 taps and it will start playing. You need to do this with the other DJ that you are mixing out of. (in theory) this will start ableton playing in time with the other DJ. You can then start your first tune and all others with quantizati...

Re: Question regarding Sampler!

Switch to the Filter/Global tab and right down in the bottom corner you will see an "R" button - switch this off. This is the retrigger button, with it on the same note will retrigger the same voice to be reused. In your other VSTs you need to look for something that modulates the volume by note vel...

Re: Mastering: Levels & Eq on Multiple Tracks Question

You then add a utility effect on the master track and increase the gain until the song peaks near 0db. It's better to do that than to just normalize when exporting the audio, because you take full advantage of the bit depth of the file. Is this really the case..? What magic trickery can the Utility...
