Re: After 10 years with ableton I just tried Studio One...

I think this topic in some form has cropped up dozens of times (Live sux in department X compared to DAW Y) and in almost every case the findings are always inconclusive. Every environment is different and it sux for some, works for others like almost all software. That is just how software is. yes...

Re: After 10 years with ableton I just tried Studio One...

For 90% of projects I use an internal 500gb Samsung Pro SSD...so I would have expected there not to be bottlenecks there - unfortunately performance sucks. My test with the 50 rendered files was done using an external HDD. The files used for both the Ableton and Presonus mixes were kept in the same ...

Re: After 10 years with ableton I just tried Studio One...

Guy Smiley - I have both - the 50 rendered tracks was on an external HD . Normally my projects sit on the same disk as samples.

After 10 years with ableton I just tried Studio One...

...and I was pretty shocked. Firstly, I've always been an ableton evangelist. I don't think ableton can be beaten on ease of use and simplicity. I teach it to students and always recommend it. But working on any large project has become such a chore in Live 9, and a finished mix is almost impossible...

Re: Implications of obscure scales in electronic dance music?

I agree - I found traktor's pitch conversion to be a bit harsh on the sound quality - but the fancy CDJ's like pioneers 2000s are pretty good these days. The lower end CDJ's , like the ones I own - CDJ 850s, have a pitch control that does affect the bass notes a bit...kind of like the 'beat' stretch...

Re: Implications of obscure scales in electronic dance music?

I have to disagree a little with supamonsta (sorry): Most DJs play off Pioneer CDJ's these days (I certainly do) which have fixed pitch control (master tempo) to enable pretty accurate Harmonic mixing. I know the keys of my songs and aim to mix two songs whose keys overlap. You don't necessarily nee...

Keep spacebar in focus?

Hi
Im SURE this topic has been covered so I apologize but I cant find the info I need:

Is there a way to keep the spacebar functioning as stop/start when a VST plugin is in focus? Im on ableton 8.3.
Does it depend on the plugin?
Cheers

Re: Live devices CPU use comparison test thread

Ive found a couple of ways to reduce CPU and disk usage - generally getting better performance in the arrange window of Live 8: 1. turn looping off. Short loops seem to ruin my performance when on a project with many tracks. Albleton seems to prepare itself for the jump back to the start of the loop...

Re: Macbook: Huge performance cut when using an external monitor

It is a new apple thunderbolt display.

If it is a graphics related issue - what can I do? Are there different graphics drivers? I guessing Apple will just tell me its Ableton's fault...

Re: Macbook: Huge performance cut when using an external monitor

My music computer is relatively new, and generally kept off the net. I have only installed applications that I use for music. Reinstalling everything is difficult due to the downtime. This behaviour (bad performance) has occurred since I bought it and the screen. Its pretty easy to narrow down the p...

Re: Macbook: Huge performance cut when using an external monitor

I'm running a 2.3ghz Core i7, 8gb ram...Snow leopard 10.6.8 Using thunderbolt port. Apple monitor. Not running any applications in the background. I even switch the airport off. The exact same tune + setup without the monitor will run at around 50% CPU usage in Ableton (very smoothly). With the moni...

Macbook: Huge performance cut when using an external monitor

Working solely on my 17" Macbook Pro, with no external screen, I get great performance out of Ableton (8.2.6). I can run shitloads of plugins at a low latency. But when when plugged into an apple screen, the same song in ableton will have its performance halved - I get dropouts even under huge laten...
