you could probably make something like this pretty easy in Quartz composer. I did a really basic flashing cube for a midi sync thing a while back..
i can post it if you're on a mac..

Osculator is worth every penny i think. Especially if you're using Wiimotes, iphones or and any other OSC stuff. Apple motion
Apple Motion has an interesting way of dealing with having both keyframe data (clip based automation) and behaviours (realtime changeable data - such as LFOs). It allows both.
