Re: Best way to set up external synthesizers in Live 9?

Ext instrument is usually better as 1) it is easier to set up, 2) You can include it in a rack with the editors and save as a preset (so you don't have to reset e.g. gain or I/O every time) and 3) there is a latency compensation dial which is a lot less trouble all round than using track delays. If...

Re: A Question for the Synth-heads

Well, in case anyone was curious—here’s what happened. I essentially broke the rack into three sections based on the musical stuff I wanted to do. Section 1 – noisemakers (9U) Korg MS2000R (5U, plus 1U for cable clearance and access to the Audio/Vocal input switch) I’ve loved the sound of this synth...

Re: USB audio interface crackle help

Yeah, I'm on my third interface too, but mostly because the used M-Audio Fast Track Ultra I bought was one of a limited factory run with a known manufacturing defect. Of course, I didn't discover this issue until I had bought it and found out that certain serial numbers develop popping and crackling...

Re: finding files

It will if you tell it to.

In your Live browser, you have an "Add Folder" feature that lets you add folders to your browser. When Live scans your project from the new location, you have the option to have it search in the current project file only or all the locations in your browser.

Re: Asio4All major update

I've been using the beta version successfully for a while now, so I was excited to hear about the update. But.... blue screen of death as soon as Ableton launches. Anybody else experiencing this?

Re: Manually added places missing after upgrade? read this!

I experienced a similar problem a couple times, including losing a customized folder structure containing all my non-Ableton plug-ins. It was a disaster having to redownload and reinstall them all, especially the free ones. Then I found some advice that recommended moving all my samples, vst folders...

Re: Choir of Angels effect

Check out Serenity, a vst synth designed specifically for creating choirs and strings. I got the Pro version on sale for $5 a few months back and have gotten a lot of great sounds out of it.

Re: Question about I/O for Synths/Soundcard

Here's some solutions I've been looking at: Option 1) Buy a patch bay: Run all four of your soundcard inputs to the patchbay, then run the outputs of your two favorite synths to the matching ports on the patchbay, using "Normal" mode. If you connect your other synth outputs to the patchbay, it only ...

Re: Plugins

A ton of great plugins come with any issue of Computer Music mag. If you buy the digital version, it only costs $5 (Apple News Stand/Google Play). You can then register your digital copy and get access to everything that normally comes on the DVD that is included with the print copy. Some of my favo...

Re: How often do you use presets?

I generally use presets as placeholders when I start conceptualizing a track. If I know I want an evolving, ambient sound or a particular flavor of kick drum, I'll drop a preset there to keep the creative flow going. Once a rough idea of the track is in place and my workflow is progressing, I replac...

Ableton Instrument Racks from a squeaking barn door

I was out in the desert helping a good friend with a film project when I came across this barn door. The wind was blowing pretty hard and the creaks and groans from the rusty hinges really fascinated me. Suddenly, I was inspired to capture that sound, so I grabbed my phone, knelt down by the door, a...
