Everybody needs the nerdy moments, specially when it comes down to 'art'. Just make sure it doesn't take away your sociale life and, most of all, doesn't become frustrating. :) If you have a passion, just stick with it. You're peaking, and rendering 'squashes' it down to 0db.
Try using a vst (like TapeIt) or an external recorder.

And it costs 200 for Sampler.

Gee, I wonder where my money is going.

Proof again that the Abs overpriced their add-ons.
Sadly, that's true.

Cutting up and/or microsampling?! That's basically it. For the 'punch', compression obviously does the trick, but 75% of the job is done by the samples you use. http://tunable.org/laser/music/uhyeahsketch.mp3 Sketchy crappy thing I just recorded to give you an idea. No compression, either. Just a fe...

Just warp the tracks, and increase the BPM via the master tempo.

A friend of mine has it, and it's rock solid, extremely efficient and pretty, too.
Unfortunately it's a bit overpriced.

Live 'slows down' the audio when cpu use is high (over 80/85% I guess), instead of 'freezing' it.
Unfortunately the only workarounds are:
- trying to reduce the cpu usage
- upgrading your system
