Re: Your favorite reference tracks - let's share and learn

D'uh, forgot to post a couple of mine. Caribou - Can't Live Without You: I pretty much love the production - every instrument occupies its own space in the mix. There is so much depth in this track - I especially love how the rides sound/sit. Deadmau5 - Raise Your Weapon: Super-balanced! The piano c...

Re: Looking for a good VST Synth for around $200

I really can't believe that no one has mentioned Synthmaster. http://www.kv331audio.com/ http://www.kv331audio.com/images/screenshots/SynthMasterHeader.png It comes with plenty of great sounds, especially if you get the "Everything Bundle", and it really is highly tweakable. I've been following thi...

Your favorite reference tracks - let's share and learn

So, I guess one of the biggest things in music production is mixing and mix down. Getting our tracks balanced and sounding great is a hard task - there's so many things we have to take into consideration! Listening environment, monitoring, listening volume, ear fatigue....ugh... But there is one thi...

I'll then feed whatever I want into it. Above, I have beat elements going into a beat bus which then goes to the mas...

Re: Chosing a studio controller - DAW functions

8O Isn’t that the opposite of how they were marketed? Although I suppose the APC40 was more "can do both" at the time it was released, but I'm pretty sure Push is, um, pushed as more of an instrument. Maybe we have differing views on the term performance. For me the APC was about taking pre-recorde...

Re: Chosing a studio controller - DAW functions

The APC for me was more a performance tool, where as Push is more of a studio/compositional tool. 8O Isn’t that the opposite of how they were marketed? Re: Confusion about sample / Simpler files

I understand what you're saying and I'm gonna try that. I think I figured out another way around it too, which makes sense now and seems simple although at the time I didn't think about it- After cropping the file it makes a sound file in the "current project" folder, which I didn't realize. I thou...

Re: Chosing a studio controller - DAW functions

I still think Push is the right device. Your bolded part is actually one of the rather weak aspects of Push. Push is great for exactly all the things he wants (besides maybe a fader unite). The APC40 would have faders, but not much else that makes it good for production. It's much better for live p...

Re: Confusion about sample / Simpler files

So, for the cropping part - highlighting with the mouse doesn't work, mate (although it feels like it should!). Use the little region markers at the top of the sample edit window, place them at the start and end of what you want and then hit crop. Boom. As for it still saving as an adv file - I see ...

Re: Confusion about sample / Simpler files

Hey, I'm having a lot of trouble with sampling in Ableton. I understand the gist of it, but when it comes to saving folders and cropped samples and presets I'm kinda going crazy. This is my problem: -I open a sound file in Arrangement View. I mark off the part I want to sample and drag it into Simp...

Re: Best way to seperate a songs instruments?

Panning and Mid-Side techniques can help some. If an instrument is in the center of the mix, you can try reducing the side channels, and vice versa. Voxengo's MSED is a freebie plug in to help you with this. I can't believe I only just started messing with M/S EQ - I feel extremely silly for not do...

Re: Things you wish you knew when you started....

Done beats better Finishing a track "quickly" is more important than spending forever on one getting it perfect...it's never gonna be perfect to you anyway. The more content you put out, the better your chances of stumbling on a winner. EDIT: not that I've stumbled on a winner in the last 20 years ...
