Re: Is my latency good enough or should I try to get it lower?

I generally record with my RME UFX (using firewire and Apple TB2 adaptor) at 128 samples. I can get lower latency - 32 samples even - but I’m happy with that and any lower really pushes my MBPro hard. 128 gives me latency I can work with and I can run some more demanding plugins when monitoring thro...

Re: Is my latency good enough or should I try to get it lower?

Yes, somewhere between 10 and 20ms latency seems to be where most people start to find problems.

Re: CPU overload after SSD upgrade

A couple of thoughts. You might need to enable TRIM on the SSD to get the best out of it. With Mojave it should happen automatically but it does no harm to check. A quick way to check is to open "about this Mac" and pick the system report tab. In system report open the hardware entry and go to SATA/...

Re: Best setup/configuration for multiple hardware synths/effects

Audio interfaces come at a wide price range. Personally I like RME - excellent sound quality and low latency drivers, rock solid and the company have a reputation for supporting their products well after they are no longer made, but RME are not cheap. Some have good built-in if a bit basic reverb, d...

Re: best audio driver for Mac

OK. I don’t have either a TR or a Behringer interface which limits my experimenting, but I think there’s at least two different things going on in that project. I hope my analysis is correct, but fi it isn’t I’m more than happy for someone to correct me. Sorry this is so long, but there’s a lot invo...

Re: external instrument midi not audible

MIDI is not audio. MIDI is just a set of instructions that tell a device that understands MIDI - a synth, sampler, effect, mixer, lighting rig, whatever - what to do. It contains no audio information or sound at all. To hear audio from your MIDI data you need to send that data to a synth/sampler. Th...

Re: Link follow time

Another way is to not use Link but, assuming both computers are on the same network, set one DAW to be the master MIDI clock and slave the DAW on the other computer to it.

This is especially easy on Macs as they have MIDI networking built in to the operating system.

Re: Dedicated drive sata or nvme

Latency is mostly down to the audio interface driver, the interface hardware and the cpu. Another factors is plugins which themselves add latency because of the time needed for them to do their sums. Latency on Windows PCs can also be affected if deferred procedure calls (dpcs) grab Windows attentio...

Re: best audio driver for Mac

I’m pretty sure there was someone on the forum who had what sounds like a very similar problem with a TR fairly recently. I think in the end they tracked the problem down to a plugin which added latency. If you’ve not done so I suggest creating a new empty Live project, add no plugins to it at all a...

Re: Outputting to multiple MIDI channels

I don’t know enough about Max to code things myself, but there are Max devices capable of sending on multiple MIDI channels from one track so it’s clearly possible. An example is an Elektron Machinedrum control plugin I sometimes use. http://www.maxforlive.com/library/device/4087/machinedrum-haters-...

Re: Using External Hard Drives

I quite understand worrying about not losing data. My backup routine is Time Machine runs once a day (controlled by Time Machine Editor) and backs up pretty much everything except audio projects, iTunes libraries and my several GB of photographs. Mostly because it would take up all day to let Time M...

Re: macOS CPU performance related to WindowServer

Just to give this a bump and keep it near the top of the forum.

This is one of the best bits of advice for running Live on a Mac with Intel graphics there is. Reducing the frame rate reduces the load on the system a lot and can make an enormous difference to Live's audio performance.

Re: Live 10: 4K screens / Performance Issues

I have my frame rate set to 30, which sent Live's audio system meter down from a minimum of between 25% and 30% for an empty project with audio breakup happening at 32-35% down to 5-6% for an empty project and I have run it up to over 70% without problems with a 128 sample buffer. Visually I can't t...
